How to Unwind After a Stressful Day

Hello my beautiful readers! Welcome back to Sunkissed Lex! I feel like my days have been so filled with uncertainty and stress lately that after a day of work, I feel I haven’t properly taken in a breath for hours, so I wanted to write this post today on how I let all that tension go when I get home. It’s important that I do this because if not, I start to take out my stress on people around me by snapping at them, and it creates a toxic environment for the people I love. So taking 30 or so minutes to unwind is definitely worth not having a grumpy Lex around.

1. Take A Bath

Taking a bath is for sure my number one go-to when I need to unwind. I turn out the lights, light some candles, and I have this really nice lavender bubble bath that seriously makes me feel like I’m melting into relaxation when I sink myself into the tub. I’ll usually put on a nice playlist and just sit and breathe until the water starts to get cold. When I get out, I feel like a different person.

2. Read a Book

Man, I love reading, and I had kind of forgotten that for a while, but recently it has become another go-to of mine when I am trying to relax. There is just something nice about being in your PJ’s all cuddled up on your couch reading a good book.  Best feeling ever!

3. Go for a Walk

I like to go for walks when I feel like I’ve had an emotionally draining day, and I feel like I just need to process things. Being outside is relaxing for me, and it lets me focus on the bigger picture and helps put things into perspective.

4. Intense exercise

My favorite form of intense exercise is running. I run a lot when I feel like I have some anger or frustration that I need to release, like when something doesn’t go the way I planned or I had to deal with a really rude customer that day. Dancing is also a great way to just let out some emotion; I love putting on an upbeat playlist and just dancing until my legs don’t want to move anymore. Physical exhaustion can help you process strong emotions and help you deal with them more rationally than you otherwise would.

5. Meditate/Deep breathing

Meditation helps me relax after a particularly hectic day. If there was just a lot going on or I was really busy at work, I like to go to a park and sit in the grass and just breathe for about 5 or 10 minutes. It helps ground me and makes my brain feel less jumbled and overworked. Meditating at home doesn’t usually work for me though, I feel like I really need to be outdoors in order to get the full relation effect I’m going for.

6. Listen to music

Music helps me process things and makes me feel less alone, so I like to listen to music when I’m feeling vulnerable or uncertain, which has been happening more and more lately. I’ll usually put it on during my nightly routine, and when I have my face mask on, I’ll lay in bed and close my eyes and just listen to the soothing music. I try not to do anything else because I really want to fall into the words of the music and start feeling what the artist wanted me to feel. Closing my eyes helps me to feel sleepy, so I usually fall asleep faster when I do this.

7. Self Massage (Or Use a Foam Roller)

When I’ve had a physically exhausting day, I like to give myself little self-massages. I’ll rub essential oil into my shoulders or do a scalp massage, and it helps relieve the tension of the day. I’ll also grab my foam roller and roll out my legs and butt, and that helps if I’ve had a long day of lifting heavy things or if I’ve been on my feet all day. If you roll out your hamstrings, it really helps relieve tension in your lower back, which is where a lot of people hold onto their stress.

These activities help me relax and unwind, and I hope they can help you as well. Being able to help yourself de-stress is super important; I know for me that if I didn’t take care of my mental health it would start to take a toll on me as well as the people I spend my time with. Remember that in order for you to be there for the people you care about, you have to take care of yourself first! I know that time is a big issue for a lot of people, but most of these things take me less than 30 minutes, and I know my life is much more pleasant because of them.

  1. Great tips Lex! If I’m angry, frustrated, or anxious a hard workout workout does wonders for me! Especially kickboxing, or a hard paddling practice! If I’m just exhausted or stressed, getting outside, reading as you said, or just giving myself permission to do nothing can be really helpful for me. Thanks for this!
